SEEL to Invest in CO₂ Transportation pipeline project to Support UK Cement and Lime Decarbonisation

July 8, 2025

Summit Energy Evolution Limited (SEEL), a wholly owned subsidiary of Sumitomo Corporation, is pleased to announce its participation in the Peak Cluster CO₂ transportation pipeline project, a major initiative to decarbonise the UK’s cement and lime industry.

The Peak Cluster project will capture and transport approximately 3 million tonnes of CO₂ annually from cement and lime plants located in and around the Peak District—facilities that account for around 40% of the UK’s total production in this sector. The captured CO₂ will be transported via a newly developed onshore pipeline to permanent offshore storage, contributing significantly to the UK Government’s carbon reduction targets.

SEEL will invest in the project through Progressive Energy Peak Limited (PEPL),a joint venture with Progressive Energy. The investment will support the project through its Front-End Engineering and Design (FEED) phase and toward a Final Investment Decision (FID) expected as early as 2028.

The captured CO₂ will be permanently stored in offshore geological formations, with the Morecambe Net Zero (MNZ) project playing a key role in providing the necessary storage infrastructure. MNZ is a major UK initiative to repurpose depleted gas fields in the East Irish Sea for carbon storage, offering scalable and secure capacity for industrial emissions.

SEEL’s participation in Peak Cluster and its connection to MNZ underscores our commitment to supporting the full value chain of carbon capture, transport, and storage (CCS), enabling hard-to-abate sectors to decarbonise effectively.

Paul Lafferty, CEO of SEEL, commented:
"This investment marks a significant step in our strategy to support hard-to-abate sectors through scalable carbon infrastructure. We are proud to contribute to the UK’s leadership in CCUS and to help secure the future of vital industries."
